Initiatives in India

Eco-petition, a national level paper presentation, is a unique sustainability initiative of Henkel targeted at school children to create awareness, promote learning and catalyze young minds to take up the cause of sustainability from an early age. By bringing together eco-education, interest in sustainability and shaping ‘eco-citizens’ for the future, this event provides students across India a common forum to appreciate and deliberate on critical issues concerning environment and sustainability

Eco-petition, conceptualized in 2004, initially targeted school students of Standard IX to XII (age14 – 17 years) across Chennai city to present papers on “Eco-concerns and Sustainability” based on their observation of their surroundings, reading and suggestions to improve the environment around them. Based on the success of this Chennai event, Eco-petition was rolled out on a national level from 2005. This event has ever since been a resounding success with the participation of school students increasing year by year.

Henkel “Eco-petition” 2009 addressed Water issues, aptly themed “Proper channelisation of water resources”. With participation covering over 500 schools across Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, school students of Class X, XI and XII stretch their minds and pounded their keyboards to rescript the future of water. The winners receive the “Henkel Envirocare Award” earning kudos from an eminent jury comprising environmental experts from Govt, NGOs, research organizations and academia.
